My
work stems from an interest in growth, movement, and expansion. I aim to convey
a feverish sense of immediacy and vitality that alludes to biological flux and
through the use of viscous porous surfaces I attempt to provide a sense that
the work is alive. There is intentionally a strong element of science fiction
in the work and I intend to suggest mutation, as if systems have cross-wired
and are melding into new adaptive forms. I also aim to suggest a limitless
potential for growth and each work evolves through a series of expanding
installations. I think of each installation as a frozen moment in the life of
the work, as if time has temporarily suspended, allowing the viewer to move
freely through a living, growing system.
The
most recent work, Brain Fruit, stems from an interest in neuroscience,
specifically the elastic potential of the mind and I hope for the work to
suggest an active mesh-work of synaptic exchange. Crafting the pieces has become
critical and I invest countless hours into perfecting each surface because I
aim to create an illusion, a fictive world and it is essential that the forms
are believable. I think of the space itself as a void or a Petri dish and I
intentionally keep the walls of the space white, installing a white floor when
possible. I hope the forms will seem pulled out of context, as if inserted into
a sterile space, a space to be examined.
